New York: Walter Cronkite, celebrating his 63rd birthday in 1980, appeared with Dan Rather at a news conference on February 14. It was announced that Cronkite would step down as anchor and managing editor of "The CBS Evening News," with Rather set to take over early in 1981. Rather (R) described his new role as a "humbling experience" and referred to his past work as a reporter as shaping the news.
