July 25, 1987: Actor Tom Cruise flew F-14 Tomcats in "Top Gun" but only managed to place 14th when he competed in Showroom Stock SSA during two days of racing at the Pocono Sports Car Grand Prix in Pocono, Pa. Cruise is the protégé of actor/racer Paul Newman and drives for the Newman-Sharpe Racing team out of Conn. Cruise drove a Nissan 300 ZX Turbo GT-1. Watching from the sidelines was Tom's new bride Mimi Rogers, her younger sister, and mother.
